Welcome to mgr, inż. Karol Urbański's website!

I'm a PhD candidate at the Jagiellonian University's Faculty of Physics. Like all great layabouts and professional slackers in history, I am a geometer. I work with differential geometry in the context of general relativity. The comma in my professional titles isn't a typo.

This website contains some personal thoughts, as well as info for the students in my classes. Imagine a blog, ran by someone too contrarian to call it a blog. The website is in English, except for the teaching materials, which are in Polish.

My room at the Institute of Physics is D-2-33. Before you show up and wonder where I've gone, shoot me an e-mail to set up a meeting.

more quake - e4m4 eh reclaimed

I went ahead and, to do something a little easier, taken over the e4m4 Easy 100%. It was my first id record, and I'm now 15 seconds faster than my first foray into the best Quake speedruns. Here's the video.

quake stuff

I've spent the last couple of weeks working on the iD run I mentioned. Had to improve my movement skill to match the absolute best in the biz, but I've done it and used a new trick to get the world record: a Nightmare any% completion of e4m8 in 39 seconds. It's a sick demo which required a lot of work to develop this level of skill, hope you enjoy.

sda stuff, c coding and more...

After my record got officially posted, I got a little bit carried away, back into the SDA/Quake community. This time, I've been actually coding stuff in the official speedrunning Quake client, JoeQuake. The codebase is, naturally, in C, and I coded cross-platform support for background music for it. And I (re)discovered the joy of C programming. I think I'll be doing more low-level coding stuff now! Another thing I'm adding -- to improve my bunnyhopping so that I can improve a very tight run on an id map -- are practice tools. They will make practice more effective, allowing for instant feedback. Truth be told, though, I'm just finding a problem to fix to do more code. They've already let me improve my performance by about 2%, and I already was one of the top players -- so that's cool.

I've also discovered the Zig programming language. Simple, but modern. Beautiful stuff. Will write more about it for sure.

But what I really want to say is... Quake mappers have gotten incredible! I highly recommend getting Quake and installing some of these mods, because the level of polish outdoes AAA games by a mile. Examples -- the Arcane Dimensions pack, with the map Foggy Bogbottom being my personal favorite; ad_heresp1, Underdark Overbright episode, and warden.

another one!

I was bored enough. Did a 100% on Nightmare difficulty on e4m8. It's all gas, no brakes, my finest record to date. A 19 seconds improvement, which is huge on an original id map. Will go up on SDA, but in the meantime: youtube with ghost of previous record.

sda reminiscences

My record is up: SDA link, and youtube link.

It's really quite amazing to have been a part of SDA all these years back. I even caught myself using downloads for 'easy start for noobs' that I myself made 16 years ago.

A bunch of bored apes around the world decided to become insanely good at a niche activity, for no other reason than to show off to other bored apes. That's just the sort of thing bored apes do. To show off, they spent the time to hone their skill, and they talked between themselves, figuring out ways to push each other further. In due time, they formed a community, which ended up running events that over a decade raised dozens of millions of dollars for charity: Games Done Quick.

A wonderful thing to have been a small, but significant cog in. I ran the updates of the main site for a couple years, around the time GDQ started. Enjoy the record. Maybe there's more to come, if I'm a bored enough ape sometime.

an update after all.

Well I didn't expect to have anything to post here so soon. Anyway, I added a link to my old SpeedDemosArchive profile and in doing so discovered someone beat one of my records on an original id map. I couldn't let this stand.

Turns out in the meantime some mechanics were found and then keybinds were added that help with those mechanics. By using them I automatically gain like 3% speed. So that's where the improvement came from. This must be how people feel hearing about records broken by guys in better shoes.

I retook the record by seven seconds. We'll see if it stands long - it is a bit sloppy in one place - but it was kinda fun to pick this game up after 16 years and still be good at it. There is an absolutely ludicrous trick in the demo, I had one in 50 success rate with it.

hello world

Made the website. To create it, I've used Lua, which is currently my favorite programming language. Tiny, but powerful.

I've made a scientific CV too.

Do not expect frequent updates, but I might put in some dumb random thoughts I have in here. Could be something about geometry, could be something about an interest of mine like working out or music or whatever else; I do a lot of different things. What a thrill!!
