On gerbes, generalised geometry and sigma-models

    Abstract:
Chosen aspects of the 2-category of abelian gerbes with connection shall be
discussed, with emphasis on the natural role played by the latter in the
description of two-dimensional field theories with conformal symmetry, known
as two-dimensional non-linear sigma models and ubiquitous in modern
mathematical physics. In particular, local and geometric constructions of the
2-category, alongside the ensuing cohomological classification results and a
geometric scheme of quantisation of multi-phase sigma models shall be reviewed,
and the symmetry content of the physical theory shall be presented with direct
reference to certain constructs of the geometry of generalised tangent bundles
and in the context of the categorial descent principle for higher-cohomological
    differential structures.
