Wave-map flow and the geometry of the space of holomorphic maps

    Abstract:
Wave maps are the analogue of harmonic maps in the case where the domain is
Lorentzian rather than Riemannian. Physically, they model the continuum limit
of isotropic antiferromagnets. In this talk we will consider wave maps in (2+1)
dimensions, concentrating on the case where physical space is a compact Riemann
surface R. We will show how the low energy dynamics of this system can be
reduced to geodesic motion on the moduli space of holomorphic maps from R to
CP1, and present various results on the geometry of this moduli space.
