Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras, Borcherds superalgebras and maximal supergravity

    Abstract:
There has been intriguing evidence recently that infinite-dimensional (super)algebras
of Kac-Moody or Borcherds type should play a central role in a more fundamental
description of the gravitational force. After an explanation of what these algebraic
structures are, the talk will review a sample of their most striking applications to
    maximal supergravity.
