Are vortices boundaries of singular monopoles?

    Abstract:
Vortices and monopoles are both classical solitons. They arise as BPS states of
supersymmetric gauge theories with matter in 2 and 3 dimensions, respectively.
In the talk I will show how the moduli space of non-abelian vortices living on a
compact Riemann surface is essentially the same mathematical object as the moduli
space of singular monopoles living on the product of the surface with a closed
interval. This raises several questions about more direct relations between the 2D
    vortices and the 3D monopoles.
